Thorin

Thorin is named over two hundred times in The Hobbit, in every chapter but 5 and 19.  A note on the naming of dwarves.

  • 01.049 and especially Thorin!’
  • 01.050 This last belonged to Thorin,
  • 01.050 but poor Mr. Baggins said he was sorry so many times,
  • 01.050 Thorin indeed was very haughty,
  • 01.052 And for me,’ said Thorin.
  • 01.062 Of course!’ said Thorin.
  • 01.063 not Thorin,
  • 01.068 and found Thorin with his feet on the fender smoking a pipe.
  • 01.068 straight through each one of Thorin’s.
  • 01.069 Now for some music!’ said Thorin.
  • 01.070 in with you!’ said Thorin.
  • 01.070 and with Thorin’s harp wrapped
  • 01.070 and when Thorin struck it the music began all at once,
  • 01.085 Where are you going?’ said Thorin,
  • 01.089 Let Thorin speak!’
  • 01.089 and this is how Thorin began.
  • 01.090 So Thorin went on:
  • 01.092 This was Thorin’s style.
  • 01.102 your grandfather, Thorin,’
  • 01.103 said Thorin disappointedly after a glance.
  • 01.106 It may have been secret once,’ said Thorin,
  • 01.112 Quite right,’ said Thorin.
  • 01.113 and handed to Thorin a key
  • 01.114 Indeed I will,’ said Thorin,
  • 01.116 went on Thorin taking no notice,
  • 01.118 Very well then,’ said Thorin,
  • 01.120 Bless me!’ said Thorin,
  • 01.122 O very well,’ said Thorin.
  • 01.124 here Thorin stroked the gold chain round his neck –
  • 01.127 yes,’ said Thorin.
  • 01.129 True, true,’ said Thorin.
  • 01.130 Here it is,’ said he handing the map to Thorin.
  • 01.131 I don’t understand,’ said Thorin,
  • 01.133 asked Thorin with a shudder,
  • 01.135 paid the goblins of Moria,’ said Thorin;
  • 01.141 I suppose you mean,’ said Thorin.
  • 01.143 he could hear Thorin still humming to himself
  • 02.009 “Thorin and Company to Burglar Bilbo greeting!
  • 02.013 “Thorin & Co.”
  • 02.023 and off we go!” said Thorin.
  • 02.031 and Thorin muttered something about supper,
  • 02.041 said Thorin to the hobbit.
  • 02.048 to Thorin
  • 02.077 Thorin came last –
  • 02.079 “O! are they?” said Thorin,
  • 02.079 in Thorin’s face.
  • 02.080 and popped a sack right over Thorin’s head
  • 02.094 whose eye had been damaged by Thorin.
  • 02.114 Gandalf and Thorin each took one of these;
  • 02.118 said Thorin to Gandalf as they rode along.
  • 02.122 “Exactly!” said Thorin;
  • 02.127 “Thank you!” said Thorin.
  • 03.018 Even decent enough dwarves like Thorin
  • 03.021 and to Thorin.
  • 03.023 “Thank you!” said Thorin a bit gruffly;
  • 03.027 father!” they cried to Thorin,
  • 03.035 This, Thorin, the runes name Orcrist,
  • 03.036 I wonder?” said Thorin
  • 03.038 Thorin pondered these words.
  • 03.043 and Thorin together,
  • 03.045 “Durin, Durin!” said Thorin.
  • 03.047 said Thorin, “is as all should know
  • 03.049 and he gave the map back to Thorin;
  • 04.006 “This won’t do at all!” said Thorin.
  • 04.008 (or so Thorin said to the young dwarves)
  • 04.025 But they had a special grudge against Thorin’s people,
  • 04.028 said the Great Goblin turning to Thorin.
  • 04.029 “Thorin the dwarf at your service!” he replied
  • 04.030 Not that it will do you much good, Thorin Oakenshield,
  • 04.031 of these truly hospitable mountains,” said Thorin,
  • 04.032 He held out the sword which Thorin had worn,
  • 04.034 and himself rushed at Thorin
  • 04.042 handing his sword back to Thorin with a bow.
  • 04.042 one – that’s Thorin;
  • 04.047 and Thorin with him.
  • 04.047 “Draw your sword Thorin!”
  • 06.012 and Thorin was stabbing here there
  • 06.046 Thorin’s beard wagging beside him,
  • 06.052 and Thorin were
  • 06.056 said Thorin,
  • 07.051 and presently Thorin
  • 07.053 Thorin Oakenshield,
  • 07.054 but if it is true you are Thorin
  • 07.093 and Thorin,
  • 07.137 then?’ said Thorin.
  • 07.142 Cheer up Thorin
  • 07.144 said Thorin.
  • 07.147 said Gandalf to Thorin.
  • 07.152 growled Thorin.
  • 08.010 How far away do you think it is?’ asked Thorin,
  • 08.016 said Thorin.
  • 08.024 said Thorin,
  • 08.029 Thorin was the only one who had kept his feet
  • 08.033 Before Thorin could cry out
  • 08.034 shouted Thorin;
  • 08.040 to this accursed forest?’ said Thorin.
  • 08.049 said Thorin.
  • 08.056 said Thorin.
  • 08.062 When they got near Thorin said:
  • 08.071 and out stepped Thorin
  • 08.073 Thorin Oakenshield,’
  • 08.128 Where is Thorin?’ he asked.
  • 08.129 Where indeed was Thorin?
  • 08.130 Thorin had been caught much faster than they had.
  • 08.130 The next time it had been Thorin who stepped forward,
  • 08.133 So to the cave they dragged Thorin –
  • 08.133 though Thorin’s family had had nothing to do
  • 08.133 Consequently Thorin was angry at their treatment of him,
  • 08.134 The king looked sternly on Thorin,
  • 08.134 But Thorin would only say that he was starving.
  • 08.136 answered Thorin;
  • 08.142 At that Thorin shut his mouth
  • 08.145 There in the king’s dungeon poor Thorin lay;
  • 09.007 but he got little more news out of them than out of Thorin.
  • 09.010 But he did not tell them that Thorin was also a prisoner with him.
  • 09.013 that that was Thorin;
  • 09.014 Thorin was too wretched
  • 09.015 to take secretly Thorin’s message
  • 09.015 telling them that Thorin
  • 09.015 nor before Thorin gave the word.
  • 09.015 For Thorin had taken heart again
  • 09.030 they came to Thorin’s dungeon,
  • 09.031 said Thorin,
  • 09.038 Thorin had given a lot of trouble,
  • 10.004 in search of Thorin’s company.
  • 10.010 It was Thorin,
  • 10.012 Thorin of course saw the sense of this,
  • 10.015 Thorin
  • 10.016 said Thorin.
  • 10.018 so leaving the others Thorin
  • 10.018 when Thorin Oakenshield stepped
  • 10.020 Thorin son of Thrain
  • 10.023 answered Thorin,
  • 10.025 said Thorin,
  • 10.029 I am Thorin son of Thrain
  • 10.029 cried Thorin
  • 10.033 answered Thorin.
  • 10.036 They did not know of course how Thorin had escaped,
  • 10.036 and to pretend to believe that Thorin was what he said.
  • 10.037 A large house was given up to Thorin
  • 10.038 Thorin looked
  • 10.042 Thorin began to think of departure.
  • 10.043 and he wondered if Thorin was
  • 10.043 Thorin,
  • 10.044 O Thorin Thrain’s son Thror’s son!’
  • 11.002 in Thorin
  • 11.004 as Thorin told them,
  • 11.006 Thorin sent out a scouting expedition
  • 11.007 he had been one of Thorin’s companions
  • 11.013 He would often borrow Thorin’s map
  • 11.024 said Thorin one day.
  • 11.034 Where is Thorin?’
  • 11.035 Thorin hurried up.
  • 11.037 Then Thorin stepped up
  • 12.001 until at last Thorin spoke:
  • 12.003 You are familiar with Thorin’s style
  • 12.003 By now he was quite familiar with Thorin too,
  • 12.004 O Thorin Thrain’s son Oakenshield,
  • 12.006 but are decent enough people like Thorin
  • 12.026 said Thorin,
  • 12.030 said Thorin.
  • 12.033 as Thorin had pointed out.
  • 12.036 asked Thorin politely.
  • 12.084 said Thorin.
  • 12.092 said Thorin.
  • 12.095 said Thorin,
  • 12.096 and to the things that Thorin
  • 12.097 murmured Thorin
  • 12.100 Slowly Thorin shook off his dreams
  • 13.002 Thorin spoke:
  • 13.006 and Thorin was the first to go forward by Bilbo’s side.
  • 13.016 Thorin gave way,
  • 13.017 As Thorin carefully explained,
  • 13.019 So Bilbo guessed from Thorin’s description;
  • 13.025 Thorin! Balin! Oin! Gloin!
  • 13.028 said Thorin.
  • 13.029 Thorin ordered.
  • 13.034 Thorin was not least among these;
  • 13.035 Royal indeed did Thorin look,
  • 13.040 Thorin!’ he cried aloud.
  • 13.041 answered Thorin,
  • 13.042 and one by one they walked behind Thorin,
  • 13.043 Thorin knew every passage
  • 13.045 said Thorin;
  • 13.047 said Thorin.
  • 13.058 Come, come!’ said Thorin laughing –
  • 13.064 soon sobered even Thorin again.
  • 13.069 said Thorin.
  • 14.034 and turned their angry thoughts towards Thorin
  • 14.041 of Thorin Oakenshield,
  • 15.002 said Thorin.
  • 15.013 and bobbed towards Thorin.
  • 15.014 O Thorin son of Thrain,
  • 15.018 before Thorin could bring the dwarves
  • 15.019 Thorin Oakenshield.
  • 15.021 Then Thorin burst forth
  • 15.023 cried Thorin.
  • 15.032 Thorin hailed them:
  • 15.032 to the gates of Thorin son of Thrain,
  • 15.034 but Thorin scowled.
  • 15.043 This song appeared to please Thorin,
  • 15.045 Again Thorin hailed them
  • 15.045 to the gates of Thorin son of Thrain,
  • 15.046 Hail Thorin!
  • 15.049 and Bilbo thought that Thorin would at once admit
  • 15.049 Thorin had spent
  • 15.050 Thorin answered.
  • 15.056 we speak unto Thorin Thrain’s son Oakenshield,
  • 15.056 but if Thorin would have the friendship
  • 15.057 Then Thorin seized a bow of horn
  • 15.059 So grim had Thorin become,
  • 16.001 and now Thorin spoke
  • 16.006 But Thorin was not moved.
  • 16.010 Not that I venture to disagree with Thorin,
  • 16.016 and all the others were busy with Thorin.
  • 16.022 companion of Thorin,
  • 16.026 Thorin’s letter that had been put
  • 16.027 However you don’t know Thorin Oakenshield
  • 16.037 and it is also the heart of Thorin.
  • 16.040 But I wonder if Thorin Oakenshield will see it so.
  • 17.001 asking whether Thorin would now listen to another embassy,
  • 17.002 said Thorin when he heard.
  • 17.004 Hail Thorin!’
  • 17.005 answered Thorin.
  • 17.009 Then Thorin was stricken dumb
  • 17.010 Thorin at length broke the silence,
  • 17.012 shouted Thorin
  • 17.014 cried Thorin,
  • 17.017 said Thorin dropping Bilbo on the top of the wall.
  • 17.018 Thorin?
  • 17.019 said Thorin grimly.
  • 17.025 said Thorin.
  • 17.026 except the armour which Thorin had given him already.
  • 17.028 called Thorin.
  • 17.030 but Thorin sent messengers by Roäc
  • 17.034 for Thorin had many relatives.
  • 17.035 between Thorin and Dain);
  • 17.055 They had forgotten Thorin!
  • 17.056 Thorin wielded his axe with mighty strokes,
  • 17.058 and Thorin drove right against the bodyguard of Bolg.
  • 18.009 companion of Thorin!’
  • 18.015 Hail! Thorin,’
  • 18.016 There indeed lay Thorin Oakenshield,
  • 18.019 No!’ said Thorin.
  • 18.020 I wish Thorin were living,
  • 18.023 and lifted Thorin,
  • 18.030 They buried Thorin deep beneath the Mountain,
  • 18.032 the elvish sword that had been taken from Thorin
  • 18.032 Of the twelve companions of Thorin,
  • 18.035 I should wish that the words of Thorin,
  • 18.038 Farewell Thorin Oakenshield!
